On November 7, 1947 at 7:45 p.m., WROD 1340 AM hit the airwaves over Daytona Beach. WROD played all of the original hits from 1947 through the early days of rock and roll in 50's and 60's. WROD remained solidly Daytona's #1 radio station, playing top 40 music into the early 70's. Throughout the next three decades WROD's format ranged from "Beautiful Music" and "Big Bands" to "Adult Standards".
In 2008 a local investor acquired the radio station under the name Volusia Broadcasting Company. The broadcast was re-formatted to air the genre of music originally played by WROD in the 50's and 60's and early 70's. Recording artists include such names as Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, The Doobie Brothers, the Beatles, and the Supremes, to name a few.
In 2012, WROD began simultaneously broadcasting on the FM band at 104.7 FM, further broadening its reach and giving its listeners the opportunity to hear their favorite music in stereo. WROD airs 24-hours a day and continues to serve the community of Daytona Beach as its original Hometown Radio Station. The broadcast can be heard anywhere in the world with its broadcast over the world wide web at WRODRadio.com. As a local community based radio station, WROD actively participates in many community events and public service functions. With over 65 years of continuous broadcasting, WROD 1340 AM and 104.7 FM has a mission to remain Daytona's Hometown Radio Station by offering a specific nostalgic format of music combined with local news, information and public service that entertains, enlightens, and educates our community.
